The
Australian Miniature Goat Club
was officially launched in February
2000 after Sue Ludwig presented
a group of enthusiast with the
plan. The Club was set up to
help unite breeders and keepers,
to try to promote the breed
as the affordable alternative
pet, and to share information
via newsletters and (later the
internet) and to provide a fair
market place offering
equal opportunities
to all breeders that wanted
to become involved in the hobby.
Over the years that followed,
using information collected
and created by Sue, standards
were set and modified and a
Grade system was introduced
to form guidelines for the development
of this new little breed.

 |
A small register was set up based on
Sue's existing records, to collect and
record information on animals used in
the development of this unique little
breed and to provide registry services
for Breeders producing them. The group
aims were to unite people with a common
interest in the keeping and responsible
breeding of animals and to encourage
Breeders to incorporate "perfect
conformation, type and ideal temperament"
into their breeding programs. The group
represents a friendly, dedicated group
of Owners & Breeders and is open
to anyone interested in the breed with
lots of emphasis on fun, friendship
and family, with most enthusiast choosing
miniature goats as a hobby rather than
a business venture.

On
the 3rd November 2003, the Australian
Miniature Goat Registry was
formally registered as a privately
owned business and although
registered as a privately owned
business, it operates as a not-for-profit
organization, putting all
revenue received back into promotion
of our unique little Breed and
all costs not covered by AMGR
revenue (phone calls, consumables,
equipment, running around etc)
are born by the “Lady in the
office”.
The
AMGR is responsive to all its
members, not just a select few.
Everyone’s on-going support
is always valued.
|
The
AMGR has set achievable height rules
in accordance with nigerian dwarf goat
and pygmy goat heights, set in other
countries and the measurement methods
are similar to those adopted by many
of Australia’s leading livestock Associations.
The AMGR recognizes five existing
breed types all easily distinguished
from one another by type. Adult animals
are shown in their individual breed
type classes, not collectively. Each
breed class will have groups of animals
all exhibiting similar traits and looking
like they all belong in one breed. Even
though our animals are predominantly
kept and sold as pets, our breeders
are always encouraged to select and
breed from quality animals. Breeders
are encouraged to pair genetically small
animals of the same or similar breed
type, early in the Grading up process
to help them fix the heights and type
characteristic in the endeavor to produce
quality animals meeting the Breed Standard
of Excellence rather than simply breeding
small to small and ending up with a
collection of little "mongrels".
Stock pictured on many of the Stud websites
shows that after many years of dedicated
selective breeding, our Breeders are
achieving the results that we are all
aiming for.
The
AMGR encourages Breeders to "get
out there" by promoting their Stud
and their animals (where ever and when
ever they can). In July 2007, the AMGR
approached a group of "Foundation
Breeders" with a request to form
an association dedicated to promoting
the breed and supporting and encouraging
longevity of the breeders. In December
2007, this dedicated group of breeders
officially registered as the Miniature
Goat Breeders Association of Australia
Inc and together we endeavor to take
the miniature goat breed to an even
higher level and closer to actual breed
recognition. The AMGR will work in affiliation
with the MGBA and together we hope to
make your involvement with your animals
and your fellow breeders enjoyable,
offering ongoing help & support
with your mini goat breeding ventures
in an effort to help you make the development
of this little breed a success.
