POLICY ON PROCEDURE FOR MEASUREMENT OF MINIATURE GOATS

The purpose of this document is to outline the procedure for the measuring of miniature goats.

DEFINITIONS
AMGR : Australian Miniature Goat Registry, for the purpose of these rules, the AMGR is an affiliate of the Miniature Goat Breeders Association of Australia Inc. (MGBAA Inc.) and Rules herein are adopted and apply equally to both.
Measuring Stick: Measuring appliance approved by the AMGR.
Measurer: Those persons who are competent to measure miniature goats.
Witness : AMGR Breeder who is competent in the measuring of miniature goats.
Handler: The person responsible for the Goat including, but not limited to, the Owner, the Exhibitor and the Lessee.

PROCEDURE FOR MEASUREMENT OF MINIATURE GOATS

1. All goats shall be measured in accordance with the provisions of the Official AMGR Rules.

2. Only an official Measuring Stick as defined below may be used for the measuring of miniature goats.

3. All goats shall be measured in centimeters.

4. The Measurer must take particular care to ensure that the surface on which the goats are to be
measured is solid, preferably concrete or paved and level. A spirit level should be used to check the
surface in this regard. The area used (at shows) should be chalk marked and all goats measured on a particular
day shall be measured within that area.

5. The Witness shall assist the Measurer and shall also examine the measuring stick reading they will be signing to. The witness is to keep the animal steady.

6. At a Show, the Measurer and or Witness should have no interest in goat/s they measure or witness. Interest is
defined as: Owning the goat or a share in the goat or having leased the goat to another party (i.e. still retain legal ownership). Ideally, if the owner of the goat measures, the witness should not have an interest in the goat and visa versa.

7. A total of three measurements may be taken, then added together and divided by three. The result shall be deemed to be the height of the goat.

8. Kid Recorded animals reaching 3yrs of age must be height verified and upgraded to Adult status within six months of becoming due as certificate will be revoked. Full adult registration fees will then apply.

9. Original Certificate, new photo and correct fee must be sent to the office for upgrade to be considered.

10. 3yr height details for the animal are submitted to the Register on the back of the animals AMGR Registration Certificate and the original Certificate is to be forwarded to the AMGR together with new photo/s and such payment as determined by the AMGR. The Application form can be used for measurement details for older Certificates (with no height application).

Height Measurement
goat measurement
* Height measurement is taken from the highest point of the wither to the ground with the animal standing on a solid level floor, preferably concrete.
- The measuring stick should be a right angle device set perpendicular to the floor with a spirit level to ensure accuracy.
-
The animal should be as relaxed as possible with its head in a comfortable upright position.
- Height measurement must be done by a knowledgeable Registered Breeder or Veterinarian.
- The height is measured in centimetres.

- It is important to make sure that the animal is standing in a relaxed position and not leaning backwards or forwards. (Accurate measurement cannot be taken when the animal is held by horns).
*It is a requirement of the AMGR that ADULT DOES 46cm or under and ADULT BUCKS eligible for Grade A or Purebred status or those measuring 52cm or under eligible for any Grade, be measured by or in the presence of a Qualified Veterinarian. (VET FORM).
Other Height Updates

* Animals should be measured at 1yr and 2yrs and must be height verified again at 4yrs of age. It is not compulsory for Owners/Breeders to submit 1yr or 2yr height measurements however upgrade discounts only apply to animals that have had 1yr and 2yr heights submitted. Accurate growth charts will give Breeders an earlier indication on the expected height/s that their animals should get to.
Special Circumstances will be worked out on growth information and is only available to Breeders that submit regular 1yr & 2yr height updates.
