We
are proud to introduce you to the Australian Miniature
Goat Breeds at Patona Park.
We have been keeping and breeding goats since 1994 and
launched the Breed and the Australian Miniature Goat
Club in Feb 2000.
Our farm was originally fenced and shelters were built
for our mini horses.
After our first goats arrived, I became hooked. Having
no experience with goats and little knowledge on these
cheeky little characters, it has been a major learning
experience indeed. |
 |
Having
studying genetics (majoring in animal breeding) and successfully
completing my Associate Diploma in Applied Science (UQG) and
having a colourful background in breeding smaller companion
animals, it made sense that I should attempt to try to create
a small "pet size" goat breed and have fun in the
process.
In
the 10 years that followed, I collected many small goats.
We have introduced many enthusiastic Breeders to this new
little breed and made many wonderful friends along the way
and between many of us, managed to document the results of
most of our predominantly experimental breeding. Now we are
pleased to say that we have indeed managed to create a little
all Australian breed with the animals that we have available
to us, that breeds true to type and height and that is very
comparable to the overseas cousins that it was based on.
We believe that any body can breed small goats but it takes
a truly dedicated Breeder with a good eye for selection to
be able to produce truly stunning, conformationally correct,
Australian Miniature goats with the animals we have access
to.
Our goal is to produce perfect Pixie goats with Bucks
around 22"-23" and Does around 20"-21"
that are genetically small, not nutritionally small. We
are a small select stud that is committed to breeding gorgeous,
well balanced miniature goats that are in proportion for their
size, that meet the AMGR's Breed standard of Excellence for
the miniature goat breed.
Our
animals have great temperaments, breed easily and are very
hardy.
 |
They
are the product of many years of selective breeding
using top quality animals obtained from far & wide.
Our
animals are selected not only for their short stature,
but also for their correct conformation and type.
We often used larger animals to bring in the type and
conformation that we were looking for.
We
are very proud of the select group of goats that we
have now bred.
We have a small herd of about 28 goats and our adults
are now all under 23" in height.
Most of our does are under 21" in height (adults)
with only a couple of "Lifers" an inch or
so taller than this. |
We
believe our breeding animals represent some of the best bloodlines
available in Australia, influenced strongly by Patona
Park Bandit, bred by Mrs Druery. "Bandit"
appears in the pedigrees of countless, small, quality animals
across the country. We have found his line to be extremely
consistent in the areas of type, temperament and small height,
when carefully paired. We are focusing on line-breeding animals
that trace back to Patona Park Bandit. We will of course do
outcrosses when necessary but feel that a program of line-breeding
will yield the most consistency in great type, beautiful conformation
and fantastic temperament in our genetically small animals.
Our fellow breeders who use our "Bandit lines" can
then create their own "outcrosses" using their own
unrelated animals, in an effort to keep the "gene pool"
fairly open.
We
endeavour to produce healthy, bouncy, well-proportioned animals
with gentle, fun temperaments that are intelligent and friendly.
Our
animals are great companions, are wonderful with our
children.
They are always interested in your daily goings-on and
will often come down the paddock to help you while you
are fencing or moving sprays or will just wait for you
to come back up so they can have a rub.
Our
animals are always willing to give you a cuddle when
you are feeling sad and are always able to put a smile
on your face with their funny little antics.
Miniature goats are very addictive, one or two can very
quickly turn into three or four and once you start breeding,
there's no going back!!! |
 |
Miniature
goats are fun, being involved in the early stages of breed
development is exciting and the people that we meet along
the way are wonderful.
If you are lucky enough to be close enough to another Stud
and are able to work with them, then your horizons are endless!
We
have been promoting these little sweeties for many years and
were invited to appear on Burkes
Backyard ,Totally
Wild and with Sue Junee (Yattarna Stud) on Better
Homes and Gardens with Dr Harry Cooper.
